Columbus Street Market

Galveston, TX

Remodel of a building that was constructed in 1928 as the first Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store in Galveston. The Galveston Piggly Wiggly location was so popular that in 1932 the building was enlarged to its present size. The"super market" began to replace the traditional "corner markets" that had been such an important part of every Galveston neighborhood. When the grocery store moved to another even larger location in the early 1960's, the building was converted into a washateria called the East End Launderette, which operated until the early 1990's. The building was also occupied by two other tenants- a furniture shop and a barber shop. In the late 1990's, the building was boarded up and for a number of years was considered a neighborhood "eyesore."

The new owners have completely remodeled the building and have named it Columbus Street Market- taking the name from the street that it is located on (Christopher Columbus Street/14th). The approximate 7,000 square foot building is located in the heart of the East End Historic District and is within walking distance from the campus of the University of Texas Medical Branch.
